On the last Sunday in February 1917, Russian women chose to strike and protest under the theme "Bread and Peace". This day was fell on March 8 on the Gregorian calendar. Their campaign eventually resulted in the implementation of women's suffrage in Russia."

The UN Charter was the first global accord to recognise the ideal of equality of men and women in 1945. Still, the United Nations did not commemorate its first formal International Women's Day until March 8, 1975, during International Women's Year.

The U.N. General Assembly declared a United Nations Day for International Peace and Women's Rights in December 1977. Member States marked it following their historical and national traditions. In the end, once the U.N. declared March 8 as the official U.N. holiday in support of women's rights and international peace in 1977, it became a widespread worldwide celebration.
